The Australian Financial Complaints Authority reported 119,949 complaints across financial services for the year to 30 June 2026, the highest annual total since the scheme began. Banking and finance remained the largest category, with 66,971 complaints, while personal loans accounted for 7,200 complaints. The figures sit alongside AFCA’s warning that some AI-generated material has been unnecessarily long, overly legalistic or has included unsupported allegations and inaccurate references.
This matters for people who feel shut out by mainstream credit or who are trying to correct a credit report issue before considering future borrowing. A complaint about a loan decline, hardship request, incorrect repayment listing or disputed fee is not strengthened simply because it sounds formal. It is strengthened when it clearly explains what happened, when it happened, what the borrower asked the lender to do, how the lender responded and what evidence supports the concern.
The latest data also points to wider pressure on household and small business finances. AFCA said financial difficulty and credit reporting complaints rose during the year, suggesting that many disputes are not only about product price or approval decisions, but about communication, records and how lenders respond when circumstances change. For borrowers comparing short term loans, unsecured loans or bad credit loans, that reinforces the need to keep copies of contracts, repayment schedules, hardship correspondence and any notices about arrears or default.
AI tools can still be useful as a drafting aid. A borrower might use them to organise events into a timeline, simplify notes or prepare questions for a lender. The risk comes when the output is treated as a substitute for checking the facts. General claims about unfair treatment are less useful than specific dates, account details, amounts, emails, call notes and copies of relevant documents.
For Australians under repayment pressure, the broader message is to act early rather than wait for a dispute to escalate. Before taking on new credit, it can also help to stress-test repayments using an educational tool such as a personal loan repayment calculator, remembering that calculator results are only estimates and not a quote, approval or suitability assessment.
AFCA’s review does not mean every lender decision will be overturned, or that every complaint will succeed. It does show, however, that borrowers and financial firms are operating in a more complex environment. Clear communication, accurate records and realistic repayment planning remain the most useful safeguards.
